Iran can 'reciprocate'

Top Iranian officials have strongly condemned the European Parliament's call for blacklisting the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, warning the EU of reciprocal measures. President Ebrahim Raeisi says enemies are trying to subject a large part of the ruling system in Iran to criticism due to its successes, but to no avail. Also, foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warns that all options against the EU are on the table. He said Tehran would consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or expulsion of international nuclear inspectors if the EU remains on its wrong course. That statement was echoed in parliament where MPs called for a decisive response and retaliatory measures against the armed forces of European countries. EU foreign ministers are set to discuss tightening sanctions on Iran next week.

Russia warning West

A ranking Russian security official has warned the West against providing Ukraine with offensive weapons that would threaten Russian territories. Vyacheslav Volodin, a member of Russia's National Security Council, warned that such provisions will lead Moscow to retaliate by using more powerful warfare. The Duma speaker stressed that “arguments against using weapons of mass destruction would be untenable” by then. The threat follows a recent request of Ukraine from the US to provide it with long-range missiles which can target Russian territories. Russia insists it won't return parts of Ukraine which it has taken control of. Kiev says that restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity is not open for negotiation. The US and NATO allies have pledged billions of dollars in weapons for Ukraine, although they’ve failed to persuade Germany to lift a veto on providing its Leopard battle tanks.

US deadly shooting

Police in the US state of California responds to a shooting that has claimed 10 lives. Another 10 people have been injured, including at least one who is in critical condition. The shooting took place around the location of a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration in the city of Monterey Park, east of Los Angeles. Police say the suspected gunman has fled the scene, and they are still trying to find him. No information was provided about the motive behind the attack which is the latest mass shooting in the US. Nearly 650 mass shootings were reported in the country last year. The bloodshed has intensified calls for stricter gun control laws amid resistance by weapons companies and their lobbies.
