Funeral in Isfahan

A funeral procession is being held in the central Iranian city of Isfahan for three security forces killed during recent riots. People turned out in thousands to pay their last respects to the victims while condemning all acts of violence and terror. They renewed allegiance to the Islamic establishment and denounced any move that would compromise national security. Several Iranian cities have been the scene of riots in recent weeks. The sometimes deadly riots have led to damage to public property and confrontations with security forces. Iranian officials have vowed not to allow anyone to jeopardize the country’s national security.

'No negotiations with Russia'

A key advisor to Ukraine’s president has rejected the prospect of holding peace talks with Russia. Mykhaylo Podolyak says it’s bizarre to hold such negotiations when Kiev has the initiative on the battlefield. Podolyak says West’s attempts to persuade Ukraine to negotiate with Russia amount to asking the country that is regaining its territory to capitulate to the country that is losing the war. He says Moscow will use the time spent on any negotiation to train and mobilize its forces in order to launch a bigger offensive. US media recently reported that some senior officials were beginning to encourage Ukraine to consider talks. Ukraine has made major advances against Russian forces in recent weeks, taking control of key areas, including the city of Kherson.

COP27 climate summit

The UN’s COP-27 climate change summit has wrapped up with an agreement, which the UN chief says, fails to drastically cut on carbon emissions. In a final statement, delegates, who gathered in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, called for phasing out of coal power. But they fell short of making similar pledges for fossil fuels, which activists say are the biggest drivers of climate change. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says the measures are not enough to address global warming. However, Guterres says the delegates did take an important step by agreeing to create a fund to provide climate loss and damage to poorer countries. The deal makes wealthy polluter nations liable for the losses incurred on poorer states.
