Biden’s Saudi visit
US President Joe Biden says he has confronted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Speaking in Jeddah, Biden said he had a good series of meetings with the Saudi leadership. He stressed that significant progress was made on security and economic issues but human rights are also a vitally important matter to him. Biden has been under fire for his visit to Saudi Arabia. The visit is seen as a U-turn on his pledge to turn the kingdom into a pariah state over its human rights record. US intelligence says the Saudi crown prince likely ordered the killing of US-based writer Khashoggi in 2018. His fiancee says Biden has the blood of the prince’s next victims on his hands.
Rejecting “baseless” US claims
Tehran has rejected as baseless the claims by the US National Security Advisor that Iran plans to send several hundred combat drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian commented on a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. The Iranian minister said such allegations are in line with certain political objectives of the United States. Amir-Abdollahian added that Tehran is ready to boost ties with Kiev and will continue to push for a political resolution to the war between Russia and Ukraine. He also accused Western governments of adopting double standards toward the crisis. Iran has repeatedly said war is not the way out of the crisis, triggered by NATO’s provocations against Russia.
“Iraq no threat to neighbors”
The Iraqi prime minister has vowed that his country will never become a platform for threats against its neighbors. Mustafa al-Kadhimi says Iraq isn’t and won’t be part of any axis or military alliance. He made the remarks before leaving for Saudi Arabia to take part in an Arab summit. There, US President Joe Biden will push for a security alliance between Israel and some Arab states. Kadhimi also dismissed claims that the issue of normalization of ties with Israel is on the agenda of the summit. He said his government will continue to serve the nation based on the Iraq First policy.
