Afghanistan earthquake
An earthquake jolted several provinces in eastern Afghanistan early this morning. The Interior Ministry says the death toll is now over 280. The 6.1 magnitude quake has wounded hundreds more. The Taliban disaster management authority says most of the deaths have been reported in the province of Paktika. Also, there have been casualties in Nangarhar and Khost. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was about 44 kilometers from the city of Khost. It was also felt in neighboring Pakistan. But so far, no reports of damage or casualties have been reported from that side of the border. Iran has already expressed readiness to provide relief aid for the affected people.
Israeli terror attack foiled
Iran's Judiciary says three agents linked to the Israeli Mossad agency had been plotting to assassinate nuclear scientists before their arrest two months ago. The prosecutor general of Sistan and Baluchestan Province says the detainees have confessed that they were in direct contact with Mossad agents. The three, whose nationalities have not been made public, will soon be put on trial. According to the official, their detention followed months of complicated intelligence operations. A thorough investigation is currently underway into their case. Israeli footsteps have been traced to the assassination of several Iranian nuclear scientists. The most recent one was Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was killed in a terrorist attack near Tehran two years ago. Iran has pledged a crushing response to any acts of Israeli adventurism.
Battle of Donbas
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the military situation is very difficult in the eastern region of Luhansk, with Russia intensifying its assault to capture the Donbas region. Ukrainian officials say Russian shelling has killed 15 people, including a child, in Kharkiv. They say Russian forces have taken control of several settlements near the embattled cities of Lysychans'k and Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region. The twin cities are seeing the most fierce fighting. According to Luhansk Governor, the Russians are massively shelling Lysychans'k, but the Ukrainian troops are holding their ground. The war, which began nearly four months ago, is now focused on the eastern Donbas region.
