Base housing US occupation troops in southeastern Syria comes under drone attack

A drone spotted flying over a military base housing US occupation troops and their allied Takfiri militants in southeastern Syria has been shot down by the US military after it was deemed to be a possible threat.

According to NBC News, the US military detected two unmanned aerial vehicles approaching al-Tanf base, which is located near Syria’s borders with Iraq and Jordan, on Tuesday evening.

One of the drones “was assessed as demonstrating hostile intent and was shot down” as it was traveling “deeper into the al-Tanf Deconfliction Zone,” while the other drone changed its course and left the area, Captain Bill Urban, the spokesman for the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), was quoted as saying.

No injuries or damage to the base were reported during the incident. It is unknown whether the drones were carrying explosives or not.

The incident came just days after Syrian state television reported that multiple blasts were heard at the same US outpost.

Sabereen News, a Telegram news channel associated with Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, better known as Hashd al-Sha’bi, also confirmed the Sunday afternoon report.

It was not clear what caused the explosions. No American troops stationed at the base were apparently injured or killed.

On October 20, the US-run al-Tanf base in southern Syria was hit by drones and rockets, in an attack that Pentagon spokesman John Kirby described as “complex, coordinated and deliberate.”

United States officials said they believe the attack on al-Tanf involved as many as five drones laden with explosive charges, and that they hit both the US side of al-Tanf base and the side where US-backed militants reside.

Bomb fragments had also been found in areas where US forces had been sleeping and stationing.

The US military has stationed forces and equipment in eastern and northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists.

Damascus, however, says the unlawful deployment is meant to plunder the country’s resources.

Former US president Donald Trump admitted on several occasions that American forces were in Syria for its oil.

After failing to oust the Syrian government with the help of its proxies and direct involvement in the conflict, the US government has now stepped up its economic war on the Arab country.
