Iran’s daily gas use at 748 mcm, curbs imposed on manufacturers
Iran’s state-run gas company the NIGC has announced that daily gas usage in the country topped a record of 748 million cubic meters per day over the 24 hours to Tuesday evening.
NIGC’s head of dispatching operations said on Tuesday that the gas consumption figure was an increase of 8% on the same day in 2020.
Households were responsible for a bulk of usage at 521 mcm amid a fresh cold spell that began earlier this week, said Mohammad Reza Joulayi, adding that large manufacturers had consumed 129 mcm and around 98 mcm of natural gas had gone to the power plants.
“The amount of gas injected to the nationwide pipeline network over this period has been 811 mcm,” said Joulayi, adding that the supply of gas to the network from two strategic storage facilities in the country’s northeast had reached a maximum amount.
The official said that the NIGC had already started to impose curbs on supplies to large manufacturing units, including top producers of cement, petrochemicals, and steelmakers.
It was not clear whether the curbs, which are meant to prevent cuts in households, have had any impact on prices of cement or steel in the domestic market.
However, Joulayi said consumption of natural gas in Iran had already exceeded the normal capacities of output once exports of gas to Turkey and Iraq as well as usage at pumping stations are included in calculations.
Iran reached a historic milestone in gas production last year at nearly 1 billion cubic meters per day. Around 80% of the output comes from the South Pars gas field, the world’s largest gas reserve which is located in the Persian Gild and is shared with neighboring Qatar.
