Beirut protest

Heavy gunfire has been heard in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, where protests are underway against a judge investigating last year's catastrophic port explosion. At least one person is dead and several others wounded. Initial reports suggest the victims have been targeted by a sniper. Army troops have moved to clear the protest site. Demonstrators, including supporters of resistance movement Hezbollah, say the judge is swayed by the United States. The protesters are outraged at what they see as Washington’s interference in the investigation. Hezbollah has already voiced its objection to the US intervention, saying it violates Lebanon’s sovereignty. The movement is calling for the removal of the judge. Lebanon’s Central Security Council is to hold an extraordinary meeting this afternoon to discuss the situation.

Israel demolitions

Israel keeps destroying and seizing more Palestinian property in the occupied West Bank. 30 commercial facilities, including a gas station, have now been demolished. The demolitions took place near the Qalandia checkpoint, north of al-Quds. Israel is planning to build a tunnel, linking a highway to one of its settlements, in the area. It also wants to build a new settlement there. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Israel regularly demolishes Palestinian homes, claiming they lack building permits. A UN report says, in August alone, nearly 100 Palestinians were displaced when their homes were destroyed in al-Quds.

Israel warned over threats

The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations has warned against any Israeli miscalculation or adventurism toward his country’s nuclear program. In a letter to the president of the UN Security Council, Majid Takht-Ravanchi said Israel’s provocative threats against Iran have increased in an alarming rate. He cited Israeli officials’ statements as saying that the regime is accelerating its strike plans against Iran. The envoy said such statements are a clear violation of international law, particularly the UN charter. Takht-Ravanchi noted that Israel was undoubtedly behind acts of sabotage against Iran’s nuclear program in the past. He urged the world body to hold Israel accountable for its destabilizing acts.
