North Korea missile tests

North Korea has fired a newly developed anti-aircraft missile, the latest in a recent series of weapons tests. North Korean media say the missile has QUOTE- remarkable combat performance. This week, Pyongyang also test fired a hypersonic gliding missile, a potential game-changer which can fly five times the speed of sound. The US has criticized North Korea’s weapons tests, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken accusing Pyongyang of increasing instability and insecurity. The North’s recent tests came after South Korea tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile, making it the first country without nuclear weapons to field such a missile.

Condemning AUKUS

China has strongly condemned a trilateral security pact between Australia, Britain and the US, saying it poses a serious risk of an arms race to the Indo-Pacific region. The Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman also warned Washington, London and Canberra that it will be futile to try to contain Beijing in the region, even after inking the pact dubbed AUKUS. Wu Qian urged the signatories to abandon the Cold War mentality and do more conducive thing to regional peace, stability and development. He also called on the trio to revoke the QUOTE wrong decision to carry out the nuclear submarine cooperation. Under the pact signed in Mid-September, Australia will acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines with US and British technology.

Shutdown averted

US President Joe Biden signs a bill into law before a midnight deadline to keep federal agencies running past the end of the fiscal year. The 1-trillion dollar bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives hours earlier, keeps the lights on for another two months after the expiry of the current government funding. The resolution had already advanced comfortably from the Senate, with opposition Republicans supporting the ruling Democrats in both chambers. The US federal government was shut down for 35 days during the previous administration, which is the longest in the country’s history.
