Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran judges the United States based on the actual actions it takes not the contradictory signals that it relays through various channels.

“We said this clearly that we will use the Americans’ practical behavior as the basis of our judgment,” the foreign minister told Iranian reporters on Saturday before leaving New York.

The senior diplomat had just concluded a four-day stay in the city, to which he had travelled to attend the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th Session.

The stay featured his sitting down with around 50 officials from various countries and attending several important conferences. He reiterated how he used the opportunity to outline the new Iranian Administration’s foreign policy.

“The Americans’ contradictory signals that are relayed to us through media or diplomatic channels do not serve as the bases of our final decision-making [process],” Amir-Abdollahian added.

The foreign minister said Iran’s behavior was governed by “wisdom and logic,” reiterating remarks that he had made on various occasions during his stay too.

“While the [American] decision-makers’ and the White House’s behavior has come to be governed by some rashness and illogicality,” he added. The official cited the US’s recent actions concerning Afghanistan as a case in point for the US’s “wrong and inefficient” policies.

The United States left a historic 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world countries, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), three years after the deal was concluded. Ever since, Washington has returned its oppressive sanctions against Iran and has also been trying to force third countries into stopping their trade with the Islamic Republic too.

Earlier this year, negotiations resumed in the Austrian capital Vienne to potentially return the US to the deal and have it lift the economic measures. Washington has withheld all sorts of cooperation towards enabling realization of any of these prospects.

Amir-Abdollahian separately noted that his talks with world officials had featured a primary focus on economic and commercial cooperation with various countries.

He predicted that the country would witness some positive developments in the area in “the not-too-distant future.”
