Taliban takeover

Taliban militants patrol the Afghan capital, Kabul, after taking over the city and declaring the end of the war. The militants were seen walking through Kabul's Green Zone, the formerly heavily fortified district that houses embassies and international organizations. They are also in control of checkpoints across the city. The Taliban took over the presidential palace in Kabul on Sunday night, as President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. A Taliban leader has said it is too early to say how the group will take over governance. He called on all foreign forces to leave Afghanistan before re-structuring governance. The Taliban accelerated their offensive across Afghanistan in recent days, which led to the fall of all cities to them.

Kabul airport chaos

Five people have been reportedly killed during the chaos in evacuating foreign nationals and Afghan civilians at Afghanistan’s international airport in Kabul. Witnesses say it is not clear whether the victims were killed by gunshots or in a stampede. Thousands of Afghans, some of whom government ministers and employees, crowded the departure terminals, desperately waiting for flights out. Other foreign nationals were also waiting to fly out. US forces fired shots in the air at the airport to prevent hundreds of civilians from running onto the tarmac. People have rushed to the airport in the hopes of catching any flight out after the Taliban takeover. The country’s civil aviation authority says Kabul airspace has been released to military control. Meanwhile, airlines have rerouted their flights to avoid Afghanistan’s airspace.

Israel West Bank violence

Five Palestinian men have been fatally shot by Israeli forces in the Jenin refugee camp in the north of the occupied West Bank. The victims were killed during a raid by the Israeli forces. Israeli troops have also arrested three people. Local media say there have been calls for a general strike across Jenin. Palestinian resistance movement Hamas expressed condolences for the lives lost, saying the pure blood of the victims proves the growing resistance of the Palestinian nation against the Israeli regime. The Islamic Jihad Movement held Israel responsible for increasing crimes against the people of Palestine. Tensions have been running high for months over Israeli atrocities in the occupied territories.
