Israel’s cyber weapon scandal

Pegasus, a weapons-grade piece of software used to hack and spy on mobile phones, has been found to have potentially infected the phones of up to 50,000 people, including journalists, lawyers, opposition figures and heads of state.

NSO Group, the manufacturer of Pegasus, founded by graduates of the Israeli cyber-spy agency Unit 8200, have denied these claims, despite traces of Pegasus being unearthed through advanced forensic analysis. New disclosures from a group of 17 media outlets, dubbed Project Pegasus, including outlets such as The Wire and The Guardian, reveal how this cyberweapon, the same tool used in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, was also used to illegally target the phones of hundreds of other journalists, politicians and world leaders and their families across the world.
