France have made history by winning their first Olympic title in their 5th appearance, after outlasting a 5-set marathon against the Russian Olympic Committee.

France got off to a perfect start by taking the first 2 sets. But the ROC fought back and tied the match at 2-sets-apeice. The Roosters then got the match point at 14-12 in the tie break before an unsuccessful attack from the Russians triggered their celebration as it went out of bounds at 15-12.

Earvin N'Gapeth led the scoring for France with 21 points, the same as Maksim Mikhaylov in the losing effort. They are now to defend their title 3 years from now, at Paris 2024.
