Trump company's CFO surrenders ahead of criminal tax charges

Former US President Donald Trump

The chief financial officer (CFO) of former US President Donald Trump's company, the Trump Organization, has surrendered to authorities as he prepares to face criminal charges.

Allen Weisselberg entered a building housing Manhattan's criminal court on Thursday, where he and a Trump Organization representative were expected to appear later in the day, Reuters reported.

A grand jury has been hearing evidence about Weisselberg after obtaining his official tax returns, according to reports.

Weisselberg, a longtime friend of Trump, has served as the CFO of the Trump Organization for about 40 years and many believe that he could be a key source of information for investigators.

The charges against Weisselberg are part of an ongoing investigation into Trump's real estate empire, which has been hanging over the former president’s head since he left office in January. Trump has called the investigations a "witch hunt" by politically-motivated prosecutors.

According to Trump’s lawyer Ronald Fischetti, the real estate mogul himself is not expected to be charged this week, but prosecutors have said their investigation into the Trump Organization will continue.

The charges center around on whether Weisselberg and other executives received perks and benefits such as rent-free apartments and leased cars, without mentioning them properly on their tax returns, according to the people familiar with the probe.

A source familiar with the matter said that Weisselberg and the company are expected to be arraigned on Thursday.

Fischetti said on Monday that prosecutors suggested the charges would be related to taxes and fringe benefits. "This will be their first blow," he said.

Trump on Monday described prosecutors as biased and said his company's actions were "in no way a crime".

The investigation into the Trump Organization was launched after a congressional testimony by his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who turned on his former boss since pleading guilty in 2018 to various fraud and campaign finance charges.

Trump, however, has slammed the state and local prosecutors in New York over their bid to launch a criminal probe into his company, describing it as a "continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History."
