Bomb blast kills 2, wounds dozen in Syria’s northern town

The video grab purportedly shows the aftermath of a bomb attack in the town of al-Rai, in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, February 13, 2021.

At least two people have been killed and a dozen others wounded in a car bomb attack in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, the state media reports.

Syria’s official news agency SANA, citing local sources, said the bombing was carried out on Saturday when an explosives-laden vehicle went off in the town of al-Rai, north of Aleppo.

Northern Syria has been hit by sporadic bombing attacks, which Turkey usually blames on “terrorists” linked to the militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Al-Rai is under the control of Turkish-backed militants.

Turkey has been involved militarily in the conflict in Syria since early 2011. It has provided the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) with military assistance.

In 2018 and 2019, Turkey launched cross-border military operations in northern Syria with the declared aim of eliminating Syrian Kurdish militants of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara regards as a terrorist organization tied to the PKK.

Syria has repeatedly condemned Ankara for its cross-border offensives, saying the presence of the Turkish military in its northern parts is an attack against the Arab country’s sovereignty.
