A US police officer has shot and killed an African-American man in San Bernardino, California, during an altercation that was partially captured on video.

Mark Matthew Bender Jr., 35, died after the officer shot him multiple times on Thursday night, San Bernardino police Sgt. John Echevarria said in a statement.

Police received a call of an armed man who was jumping on vehicles outside a liquor store near Waterman Avenue, the statement said.

A solo officer was on patrol nearby and responded to the call.

The officer contacted the suspect who refused his commands and attempted to enter the store, which had people inside, Echevarria said.

The officer tried to restrain Bender and there was a struggle, police said.

“The suspect was able to physically overpower the officer and retrieved a weapon from his pocket, and was turning to face the officer,” the statement said.

“When the officer saw that he had a weapon, he defended himself with his firearm,” Echevarria said, adding that detectives at the scene found a handgun Bender allegedly pulled out from his pocket before he was shot.

The San Bernardino Police Department released footage from the officer’s body camera that showed the fatal encounter, which lasted just one minute.

Research has shown that African American men are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by law enforcement in the US.

Police-involved shootings and killings of black men in the hands of white police officers have led to mass protests across the country in recent years, giving birth to the Black Lives Matter movement.
