Palestinians warn about deteriorating condition of hunger striking prisoner

49-year-old Palestinian prisoner Maher al-Akhras is going on with an open-ended hunger strike he started nearly 90 days ago, despite critically his deteriorating health condition.
Al-Akhras, is protesting his imprisonment without charge or trial under Israel’s so-called administrative detention policy.
The Palestinian Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs warned, during a latest protest held in solidarity with al-Akhras in Ramallah, that he is facing an imminent threat of death if Tel Aviv doesn't end his detention.
Al-Akhras was transferred in early September to Kaplan Medical Center, south of Tel Aviv. His lawyers have appealed to Israel’s high court for his release but the court only recommended his release from prison by November 26 if he ends his hunger strike. However it has not promised letting him free. In a number of past cases, Israeli authorities were forced to release hunger striking prisoners only after they were on verge of death.
Among about 5000 Palestinian inmates held in Israeli jails, hundreds are imprisoned without charge or trial. Human rights groups say Israel should either prosecute those prisoners or release them. However, such calls have repeatedly fallen on deaf ears in Tel Aviv.
Prisoners Advocacy groups warn that Israel is being intransigent in dealing with Maher al-Akhras’ legal demands to make sure that no more prisoners would follow his path in the future.
