African American paralyzed after police shooting in Wisconsin
African American Jacob Blake, who was shot by police in the US state of Wisconsin, has been paralyzed from the waist down, his father has announced.
Jacob’s father told the Chicago Sun Times that his son had “eight holes” in his body and the brutal shooting had left him paralyzed from the waist down.
The 29-year-old was shot in the back multiple times in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday in front of three of his children after police arrived at a scene in which he was trying to break up a fight between two women. He was unarmed.
“What justified all those shots?” his father said. “What justified doing that in front of my grandsons? What are we doing?”
The shooting sparked two nights of protests in Kenosha as well as other cities across the country, with protesters setting buildings and cars on fire. Police officers in riot gear fired tear gas to disperse angry protesters.
Tony Evers, the Wisconsin governor, announced in a statement that he had authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to the city to contain the protests as well as the imposition of a curfew.
The shooting came as the US was already the scene of months-long protests over the brutal murder of another unarmed African American, George Floyd, in police custody in May.
The 46-year-old Floyd died after a white officer knelt on his neck and kept him pinned to the ground in that position for nine minutes in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25.
His death unleashed mass rallies against police brutality and for racial justice in the US and many world countries, breathing new life into the Black Lives Matter movement.
