Anti-Netanyahu protests continue in Jerusalem

As the Israeli Knesset Dissolution approaches, protests demanding prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign gain further momentum.
Saturday night protest came before August 25 deadline for the Israeli parliament to agree on a budget plan or trigger new elections, amid deepening coalition crisis between Netanyahu’s Likud and Blue and White party led by his main coalition partner Benny Gantz.
On Saturday night, dozens of protesters were detained by police as thousands of Israelis rallied near Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem al-Quds.
Israelis are protesting, first because of the regime’s mishandling of the coronavirus crisis and second, the corruption charges against Netanyahu. If fresh elections are called, they would be the fourth since April 2019.
Moreover, Israel’s settler leaders deemed always as Netanyahu’s supporters, are angry at his policies. They say Netanyahu has defrauded them of their long-held dream of annexing the occupied West Bank as part of the Tel Aviv’s normalization deal with the United Arab Emirates.
Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls to step down while on trial, insisting that the protests are orchestrated by media and the leftists. However, the premier seems to be willing to compromise this time, though his own party will decide whether or not the Knesset will be dissolved.
