Russia begins building first strategic stealth bomber: Report
Russia has begun manufacturing a prototype of its first strategic stealth heavy bomber, which is expected to be completed next year, a report says.
When operational, the new aircraft will be capable of carrying a wide range of advanced missiles and bombs, including hypersonic weapons, reported Russia’s TASS ass news agency on Tuesday, citing two unnamed sources from the state-run United Aircraft Corporation as saying.
According to the report, the military-industrial complex is overseeing the project of building the new bomber, known as the PAK DA, which will compete with the US Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, which entered service in 1997.
The TASS report added that the material had been shipped for the project and that work had begun on the cockpit of the heavy bomber.
“The final assembly of the entire machine should be complete in 2021,” one of the sources told TASS.
Other reports indicated that the PAK DA would feature a flying wing design similar to American stealth bombers.
Russia has already developed its own stealth warplane, known as Sukhoi Su-57, which is a single-seat, twin-engine, multirole, fifth-generation jet fighter. It first flew in 2010 but has yet to be manufactured in large numbers.
Meanwhile, China is also developing its own long-range subsonic stealth bomber, known as the Xian H-20, which reportedly might make its first public appearance at an air show in November.
