Israel has decided not to respond to an official request by the Palestinian Authority to allow holding polls in the holy city.

President Mahmoud Abbas has noted that elections won’t be held if Israel prevented Palestinians living in Jerusalem al-Quds from voting inside the city. Palestinian officials have meanwhile demanded the International community to force Israel allow the planned elections in the holy city.

Parliamentary elections has not been held since 2006, whereas the presidential elections has not taken place since 2005. The PA and Hamas have been at loggerheads since the latter ousted the former from Gaza Strip in 2007.

The two rival Palestinian factions agreed on a unity government in April 2014, but it fell apart months later. Palestinian officials say Israel does not want to see Palestinians go to polls because it wants to keep them divided.

At the end of the day, observers argue it's still hard to tell whether these elections will help settle divisions between Fatah and Hamas.

Palestinians have made their voice heard: election is necessary however it should not be held at any price. They stress that there would be no election without a vote in the holy city of Jerusalem al-Quds. And here observers say, Palestinians will be facing an uphill road to resolve this dilemma.
