A British military adviser in Jordan has been forced to return to the UK after getting embroiled in the Kingdom’s politics.
The Times is reporting that Brigadier Alex Macintosh returned to the UK after five years service in Amman.
It is being reported that Macintosh had become embroiled in local political disputes involving King Abdullah and senior Jordanian politicians.
Emerging news indicates that another senior (as yet unnamed) British army officer has already replaced Brigadier Macintosh.
The political scandal involving Macintosh has exposed the strong influence which Britain wields at the highest reaches of the Jordanian state, primarily by placing senior British officers as “advisors” at the heart of the Jordanian system.
This developing story comes in the wake of Britain’s formal admission that it provides training to the Saudi Arabian National Guard, which is tasked with protecting the Saudi royal family.
The UK has a well-established policy of placing senior serving or retired officers as “advisors” within the military and security structures of its key allies in the Middle East, notably Saudi Arabia.
