Iran’s reduction of compliance with JCPOA
After waiting for one full year, Iran partially pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal on May 8th to voice its discontent of EUs disregard for USs sanctions on Iran.
May the 8th is a day claimed by the JCPOA or Iran Nuclear Deal. Not in making the deal, but in divorcing it. The US did so in 2018. A year later on the same day, a disillusioned Iran partially pulled out. But for this partial reciprocation, Iran is being threatened by Western Europe and being further boycotted by the US.
The JCPOA or 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was signed between Iran and the P5+1, thats the UN Security Council permanent members plus Germany. It was to limit Irans nuclear programme in return for lifting economic UN nuclear-related sanctions off that country. Iran fulfilled all of its commitments under the deal; however, the US government ditched the deal as soon as Trump came to power. The EU kept giving promises to compensate for the USs sanctions but only in words as far as the US sanctioned Irans oil sales.
Finally, after waiting for 1 year from USs withdrawal from the deal, Iran decided to leave the deal partially as it sees no reason to stay in the deal. In announcing Irans partial break with the nuclear deal, President Hassan Rouhani set a 60-day deadline to get sanction-relief. Should his demand go unmet he said, he would resume enriching uranium to a higher level than now allowed under the nuclear deal.
