The results of the US midterm elections

Americans voted in this month's high-stakes midterm elections following a divisive campaign characterized by lies, anger and racial attacks.

President Trump was not on the ballot but he remained the center of the storm. President Trump's Republican Party retained control of the US Senate, where 35 out of the upper chamber's 100 seats were up for election. But Democrats won the House of Representatives in a major blow to President Trump.

All 435 seats in the House were up for grabs and Democrats claimed at least 27 seats mostly in suburban and metropolitan districts. Democrats won the popular vote by more than 8 percent nationally.

The young and Latinos turned out in huge numbers and women threw their lot in with the Democrats. With control of Congress split between the two parties, political experts say Washington will remain status quo, doing little and getting even less done.
