US President Donald Trump has blasted the FBI, the media and his own Attorney General Jeff Sessions as political pressure mounts on him over the Russia investigation.

In a series of scathing attacks on Saturday, Trump said he "may have to get involved" in an FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 presidential campaign.

On Twitter, Trump also rejected accusations of his alleged knowledge about the efforts made by his campaign to get damaging information about Clinton from a Russian agent during a meeting in Trump Tower.

“I did NOT know about the meeting," Trump tweeted on Saturday. "Just another phony story by the Fake News Media!"

He also posted tweets criticizing Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his recusal and inaction to “what is happening underneath his command position.”

Trump started lashing out at Sessions and the Justice Department after his former attorney Michael Cohen’s plea deal and a guilty verdict for his former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

The president's criticism of the attorney general, whom he has chosen himself, is rooted in Sessions' recusal from a probe investigating Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and possible collusion with the Russians.

Sessions, who has announced that he would not let politics interfere in justice, allowed his deputy Rod Rosenstein to appoint special counsel Robert Mueller last year to lead the Russia investigation.

“The actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations,” Sessions wrote on Thursday.

“Jeff Sessions said he wouldn’t allow politics to influence him only because he doesn’t understand what is happening underneath his command position. Highly conflicted Bob Mueller and his gang of 17 Angry Dems are having a field day as real corruption goes untouched. No Collusion!,” Trump tweeted.
