Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has overseen the destruction of dozens of high-end cars worth almost $1.2 million as part of his crackdown on vehicle importers.

Among the cars which were bulldozed on Tuesday were BMWs, Jaguars, Mercedes Benzs and Corvettes.

Most of cars were destroyed at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) grounds in Manila where Duterte personally oversaw the ceremony.

While announcing his new policy last week, Duterte said, “It will now become policy to bulldoze smuggled luxury vehicles.”

Formally-seized smuggled vehicles were auctioned to generate income for the government.

Duterte claimed that auctioning confiscated cars only grants smugglers an opportunity to procure them legally.

The Philippine leader is well known for his eccentric and harsh policies.

Last year, he gave the green light to the police to kill what he called the “idiots” who resist arrest.
