A US media report says the special counsel investigating Russia’s alleged role in the US presidential vote plans to question Donald Trump in the coming weeks.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that US Justice Department's Special Counsel Robert Mueller was seeking to question Trump as part of an investigation into potential collusion between Moscow and Washington in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Mueller wants to interview the incumbent US president in the coming weeks about his decision to sack former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former FBI Director James Comey, according to the report.

The Washington Post quoted the president’s legal team as saying that they hoped to provide Trump’s testimony in a hybrid form, consisting of face-to-face interviews and written statements.

Trump fired the FBI director in May, citing Comey's investigation into alleged links between his presidential campaign and Russian interference in the election, as well as Comey's alleged protection of former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The former FBI chief was accused of exonerating Clinton of criminal charges regarding her personal email.

Flynn pleaded guilty on December 1 to lying to the FBI. He made a deal to cooperate with the FBI examining allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow during the 2016 election.

Early on Monday, the US Justice Department confirmed that Trump's Attorney General Jeff Sessions had been questioned last week by Mueller’s office as part of an official probe into alleged Russian interference in the last year election.

The department said Sessions had been questioned for several hours, making him the first known cabinet member to be interviewed by the special counsel.

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia tried to help Trump win the election by hacking and releasing emails damaging to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Trump has repeatedly denied allegations that his campaign colluded with Russians and has condemned the investigations. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also denied the allegations.

Mueller has impaneled a grand jury, meaning he is allowed to subpoena officials and get sworn testimony which may lead to criminal indictments.

While many top Republicans have attempted to discredit the US Justice Department's special counsel leading the investigation, Trump believes Mueller “will be fair” to him in the probe.
