Israeli Palestinian peace process: Where does the US stand?
America’s credibility as a mediator between the Israelis and the Palestinians has been seriously dented under US President Donald Trump. He recently declared Jerusalem al-Quds as the "capital" of Israel. It infuriated the Palestinians who want the city as the capital of their future state. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said last week that any future negotiation between the two sides can only take place under international mediation. Reports say Abbas rejected further US mediation after he was informed by Saudi Arabia of Trump’s emerging plan for the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Trump’s plan is being written by his son in law and senior advisor Jared Kushner who has growing financial ties with Israeli institutions and individuals. Reports suggest the emerging plan strongly favors the Israelis and would violate UN resolutions.
30,000 border force in Syria: Denied by Tillerson
Another sign of chaos at the White House under US president Donald Trump. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerosn has denied Washington is planning to create a 30,000-strong Kurdish militant contingent along Syria’s borders with turkey and Iraq. The news that the US wanted to form the force broke earlier and drew an angry reaction from Turkey. Ankara has said it will nip the Kurdish force in the bud if Washington makes good on its plan to create it. Turkey’s reaction aside, the contradictory statements from the white house and the secretary of state could foster the notion that the Trump administration is deliberately trying to undermine Tillerson. Some observers believe that the state secretary would have been removed from his post by trump were it not for the support he enjoys from the GOP.
