Mueller may interview Trump in next few weeks

US special counsel Robert S. Mueller is seeking an interview with President Donald Trump, under investigation over possible collusion with Russia, within the next several weeks, sources say.

“This is moving faster than anyone really realizes,” said one of the two people familiar with the talks, The Washington Post reported Monday.

In December 2016, Mueller brought up the issue of interviewing the president during a meeting with his lawyers, John Dowd and Jay Sekulow.

The president’s legal team is allegedly attempting to prevent a face-to-face questioning of Trump and is instead focusing on a possible written response.

“No lawyer just volunteers their client without thinking this through,” said one of the people familiar with the talks.

The White House lawyer overseeing the administration’s response to the so-called Russia probe said in a statement that correspondence with the US Office of Special Counsel (OSC) does not need to be made public.

“The White House does not comment on communications with the OSC out of respect for the OSC and its process,” Ty Cobb said. “The White House is continuing its full cooperation with the OSC in order to facilitate the earliest possible resolution.”

Cobb had reiterated on several occasions that all interviews of the White House personnel in the investigation would finish by the end of December 2016 or in early 2018.

“Just so you understand, there’s been no collusion, there’s been no crime, and in theory everybody tells me I’m not under investigation. Maybe Hillary [Clinton] is, I don’t know, but I’m not,” Trump told reporters at Camp David on Saturday. “But we have been very open. We could have done it two ways. We could have been very closed, and it would have taken years. But you know, sort of like when you’ve done nothing wrong, let’s be open and get it over with.”
