Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey FMs to hold political, regional talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has arrived in Azerbaijan's capital Baku to attend the fifth trilateral meeting with his Azeri and Turkish counterparts.

According to Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zarif set off from Tehran for Baku on Tuesday to participate in the meeting slated to be held on Wednesday.

It added that Zarif and the Azeri and Turkish foreign ministers, Elmar Mammadyarov and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, respectively, plan to exchange views on a broad range of issues in various economic fields, including transit, transportation, energy and customs.

They will also exchange views about issues of common interest in technical and trade sectors as well as political and regional cooperation, particularly ways to promote peace and stability in the region, the ministry said.

In a press release on Monday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the three foreign ministers would discuss ways to enhance cooperation on the basis of common interest and consolidate regional prosperity, stability and security.

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry also said Zarif, Mammadyarov and Çavuşoğlu would hold a joint press conference after their meeting.

The fourth session of trilateral meeting was held in the Iranian city of Ramsar in the northern Mazandaran Province in April 2016. At the end of the session, foreign ministers of Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey issued a statement and signed two documents to strengthen trilateral cooperation and improve peace and security in the region.

Tehran, Baku and Ankara had met in the northwestern Iranian city of Urmia in West Azarbaijan Province in 2011, in Azeri city of Nakhichevan in 2012 and in the Turkish city of Van in 2014.

The mechanism to set up the foreign ministerial meeting among Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey pursues objectives including exchanging views on trilateral and regional issues on the basis of understanding and ways to strengthen stability and security.
