Kurdistan opposition group demands Barzani's resignation

A major Kurdish opposition group has called for Barzani to step down immediately. Gorran, or the Change Movement, is calling for the formation of a salvation government and insists that the Kurdistan Regional Government must be dissolved because it has proved incompetent. The Gorran Movement is the official opposition to the current Kurdish administration. It was opposed the recent referendum on secession from Iraq because it believed the timing was not appropriate. In a statement posted on its website, the Kurdish opposition group said Barzani refused to listen to the demands of Kurds and those of Baghdad triggering another serious crisis for the northern Iraqi region. Meanwhile, the recent takeover of the oil rich city of Kirkuk by Iraqi forces from Kurdish fighters further revealed that Baghdad is serious about defending Iraq’s territorial integrity.

Tillerson on Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units

When US Secretary of State arrived in Riyadh to push ahead a strategy to bring Iraq closer to Saudi Arabia and away from Iran, many doubted his efforts would ever succeed. And it was a controversial comment that Rex Tillerson made that showed he was unaware about the realities on the ground in the region.  He launched an attack on Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, saying that they – as a foreign force - need to go home. Tillerson’s remarks drew an immediate reaction he may have never expected from Iraq’s Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi. “No party has the right to interfere in Iraqi matters.” This was a response to Tillerson’s remarks as included in a statement by Abadi’s office.
