Clinton's lead over Trump shrinks in swing states: Poll
The race between US presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in some battleground states is tightening as Clinton loses her lead over Trump, according to a new poll.
Clinton and Trump are tied with 47 percent support each among likely voters in the state of Florida, according to the Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released Thursday.
Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson had 8 percent support and Green Party nominee Jill Stein had 2 percent backing.
Clinton and Trump are also in a virtual tie in Ohio, while her lead over Trump has shrunk to 4 points in North Carolina and to 5 points in Pennsylvania.
Battleground states, also called swing states, are states in which no single nominee or political party has overwhelming support in securing that state's electoral college votes.
In presidential elections, such states receive significant attention from the media and the campaign of political parties, since winning these states is the best opportunity for a candidate to gain electoral votes.
Politico listed Virginia, Iowa, Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Ohio as the seven swing states for the 2016 presidential election.
Clinton's lead has largely vanished despite a difficult month for Trump, which saw an overhaul of his campaign staff, criticism of his campaign strategy and announcements of support for Clinton from several high-profile Republicans.
Clinton’s growing unpopularity follows renewed focus on her use of a private email server while she served as secretary of state, as well as alleged conflicts of interest over her connections to the Clinton Foundation fundraising.
A CNN/ORC Poll released on Wednesday shows Donald Trump has closed the gap with Clinton and leads her nationally in the race for the White House by two points.
Like previous surveys in past several months, the poll also shows that both candidates remain mostly unliked, with majorities saying they have an unfavorable view of each candidate.
Polls taken in the past several months have shown that Clinton and Trump were ranked among the most unpopular presidential candidates in America’s history.
