Pence accepts Obama’s birthplace, Carson calls for apology
Donald Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, acknowledges that President Barack Obama was born in the US after the GOP nominee’s advisor, Ben Carson, urges him to apologize over years of questioning the commander-in-chief’s birthplace.
"I believe Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. I accept his birthplace," said Indiana Governor Pence.
He declined to say whether he thought Trump should apologize, adding, "I just don't know where he's coming from on foreign policy and on economics and on ObamaCare.”
Carson said earlier that it was a “good idea” for his former Republican rival to apologize to the president.
"I think that would be a good idea, absolutely," he said on CNN on Monday. "I suggest that on all sides. Let’s get all of the hate and rancor out of the way."
Trump has recently been reticent about his previous stance, saying Obama was born in Kenya, which finally made the White House release Obama’s birth certificate in 2011.
The stance, considered racially charged by the African American community, is thought to be the main obstacle the Trump campaign faces in attracting black voters.
"I don't even talk about it anymore," Trump said on Fox News Tuesday.
Trump has been quite unpopular among African Americans, like other US minorities, with low single-digit points at polls.
The New York billionaire visited Carson's hometown, Detroit, along with him on Saturday as part of efforts to win back his tarnished reputation.
According to a CNN poll released Tuesday, Trump enjoys 18 percent support from non-white voters while his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, is backed by 71 percent, 53 points higher.
