Israel demolishes Bedouin-owned property in Negev

    • Israeli troops have reportedly demolished Palestinian-owned structures in several Bedouin villages in the Negev desert. Bedouin member of the Israeli Knesset, Talab Abu Arar, has denounced the destruction, saying the demolitions are conducted for political and demographic reasons. Israel destroys Palestinian homes under different pretexts despite international condemnation.
    • Saudi Arabia has expressed deep regret over a decision made by medical charity Doctors Without Borders to withdraw staff from hospitals in Yemen.     • The United Nations confirms that South Sudan’s former vice president and opposition leader Riek Machar has fled to neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq confirms that Machar has been handed over to the authorities in the DRC, but is unable to confirm his location.
    • A Mexican human rights group says police executed at least 22 suspected gang members on a ranch in the state of Michoacán in May 2015. The president of Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission said the police moved bodies and planted guns to manipulate the scene, and lied about the incident.
    • At least three Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in clashes with pro-Russia fighters in eastern Ukraine. An official said the positions of the army were shelled by the pro-Russia militias in the volatile region. The militias also reported heavy shelling of their positions by the army in Donetsk and Horlivka.
    • Iranian Taekwondo player Kimia Alizadeh has won a historic bronze medal in the women’s under 57 kilogram category at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Alizadeh defeated Sweden’s Nikita Glasnovic 5-1 in her last match. This is the first ever medal Iranian women have earned in the Olympic games.
