Iraqi president calls for unity against ‘grave threats’
Iraqi President Fuad Masum has called on all political blocs and authorities to pursue national interests and address the "grave threats" that face the Arab country.
He also urged dialogue between political actors in the country to join forces “to achieve victory over terrorism and to find effective solutions to cope with the stifling economic crisis,” Arabic-language al-Sumaria news website reported.
In the televised speech on Wednesday, the Iraqi president also addressed other issues such as reconstructing the war-hit regions, returning the displaced civilians to their home towns, developing the public services and raising the standard of living for the low-income people.
He also said it is "absolutely necessary" for the legislature to reconvene after its seizure by protesters, and called on all political actors to make every effort to “heal quickly” the legislative body.
Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said that defeating the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, which holds a swath of Iraqi territory, “requires all sides to forget about disagreements and support our heroes in the fight to liberate the land of Iraq.”
Last week, hundreds of demonstrators, demanding political reforms, broke into the heavily-fortified complex of Baghdad's Green Zone, which houses the country's key government institutions, and stormed the parliament. The protesters, however, disbanded their move on Sunday and left the parliament.
The protesters issued a number of demands, including the resignation of the president, the prime minister and the parliament speaker and a parliamentary vote on a technocrat government.
Iraq has been the scene of a political turmoil in the past weeks over Abadi’s efforts to form a new cabinet.
The country is also plagued by gruesome violence in the north and west ever since Daesh terrorists launched an offensive in June 2014 and took control of portions of Iraqi territory.
