UN special envoy for Syria rejects any foreign interference in Assad fate

  • UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura rejects foreign interference in determining the fate of the Syrian president. He said the matter should be decided by the people of Syria. De Mistura also said Syria’s truce has led to a sharp reduction in the number of deaths.
  • Syria’s Saudi-backed opposition coordinator says conditions are not favorable for the resumption of peace talks on March 9. Riad Hijab added that the terms of the truce have not been met yet. Hijab however noted that it’s too early to say if the Syrian government’s opponents will attend the negotiations.
  • At least 16 people have lost their lives after gunmen opened fire on an elderly care home in the Yemeni port city of Aden. Officials say four of the victims were Indian workers. No group has claimed responsibility for the killings so far. But officials believe Daesh is the main suspect. 
  • Thousands of people have attended a rally in the Iraqi capital Baghdad calling for economic reforms. The protesters are angry over alleged corruption among government officials and also poor public services across the country. The rally was held following a call by Iraq’s senior Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
  • Protesters in the Turkish city of Istanbul gather outside the headquarters of the country's leading opposition newspaper, Zaman. This, after authorities conducted a raid on the building. The daily which is a critic of President Rejeb Tayyib Erdogan is accused of having ties with US-based opposition figure Fethullah Gulen.
  • Spain's Socialists have for the second time failed to garner the support of lawmakers to form a government. Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez made his first unsuccessful attempt to become the prime minister on Wednesday. Parties now have until May 2 to negotiate an alternative power-sharing agreement.
  • Spanish police have found some 20-thousand uniforms meant for terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria including Daesh and Nusrah Front. The shipment was labeled second-hand clothing to avoid suspicions. Seven people were reportedly arrested in connection with the seizure.
  • Israeli forces have leveled over 40 Palestinian houses south of the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. The UN says the demolitions left 36 Palestinians homeless including 11 minors. Tel Aviv has repeatedly destroyed Palestinian homes, saying they’ve been built illegally.
