UK environmental activists hold rally against PM's house in Witney
UK environmental activists have held a rally outside Prime Minister David Cameron's home in Witney to protest against his government’s fracking plans.
The protesters said they are worried about the environmental consequences of the plans. They also drove a tank to Cameron’s constituency as part of their protest. The tank was used to carry out a fake chemical attack on Cameron’s house.
The activists accused Cameron of using chemicals against his own people.
The protest follows government’s earlier announcement that it would offer license for fracking in 27 locations in Yorkshire, the north-west and the east Midlands.
Fracking involves blasting dense shale rock with a mixture of sand, water and chemicals, opening up tiny fissures in the rock to release the microscopic bubbles of methane gas trapped within, which can then be gathered at the surface.
Earlier, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said it will not allow hazardous operations when it comes to fracking.
It said, any chemicals used were subject to assessment by the Environment Agency which will not permit their use if there is a risk to the environment or people's health.
