Mexico border clashes

A US bound group of migrants has clashed with Mexican police after they entered the country through the Guatemala border. The clash broke out in the town of Tecuan Uman on Sunday. Security forces shot rubber bullets at the asylum seekers. A 26-year-old Honduran was killed and six police officers were injured. Elsewhere in South America, migrants are fleeing looming poverty and violence. Another group of refugees, heading to the US, set off from El Salvador and entered Guatemala on Sunday. The issue of South American migrants, trying to make it to US, has affected US congressional elections. Earlier, President Donald Trump threatened to use the military to stop them. Defense Secretary, James Mattis has approved the deployment of hundreds of more troops to the southern US border. There are already 2,100 military personnel at the border.

Merkel to quit in 2021

The German Chancellor says she will not seek re-election as the chairwoman of her Christian Democratic Union party in December. Angela Merkel stressed she will not seek any political posts after the 2021 election. This, after Merkel’s CDU party suffered heavy losses in regional elections. Exit polls from Germany’s central state of Hesse show the CDU will get only 28 percent of the vote. The Social Democrats, Merkel’s coalition partners, won 20 percent. The pro-immigration Green party also garnered nearly 20 percent of the votes. The defeat for the coalition follows a disastrous result in Bavaria earlier this month. Merkel's junior coalition partners have threatened to quit her governing coalition.

Georgia election

Final results from Georgia’s presidential election show the two frontrunners have to face each other in a second round runoff vote. The Central Election Commission says Salome Zurabishvili supported by the ruling Georgian Dream party has secured nearly 39-percent of the vote. It says opposition leader Grigol Vashadze has won nearly 38 percent. A candidate needs to win 50 percent plus one vote to be elected in a single run. Both candidates have campaigned on similar promises to bring Georgia closer to full membership of the European Union and NATO.

Israel crackdown

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian protester in fresh clashes in the Gaza Strip. The 27 year old man was shot in the chest in protests near Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. The protest is the latest from the Great March of Return weekly protests. The rallies call for lifting the blockade on Gaza. Over 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops since the protests began on March 30. Israel has been criticized by rights groups over its brutal crackdown on the peaceful protesters. But it continues to enjoy immunity for its crimes amid international silence.
