Israel Gaza atrocities

Israeli forces have yet again used violence against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza strip. In the latest episode, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian civilians in several spots along the enclave. A farmer was reportedly injured and transferred to hospital for emergency medical care. Israeli forces also attacked al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. Israel relentlessly applies brutal measures in the besieged territory. On Friday, Israeli soldiers shot and killed five Palestinians during weekly anti-occupation protests. Two more injured protesters also succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital on Sunday. Over 200 Palestinians have been killed in violent crackdown since the protests began on March 30.

Sri Lanka political crisis

Sri Lanka’s sacked prime minister has ignored a presidential order to evacuate his official residence, after he was dismissed on Friday. Hundreds of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s supporters also gathered outside the residence to prevent his eviction, as the army stood guard. Wickremesinghe says his dismissal was illegal. He has called an emergency meeting with his political allies to prove that he still holds a parliamentary majority. On Saturday, the Sri Lankan president replaced Wickremesinghe in a controversial move. The new prime minister is expected to name his cabinet on Monday.

Brazil presidential run-off

Voting is in full swing in Brazil, as people cast their ballots to choose the country's next president. A new poll suggests that leftist presidential hopeful Fernando Haddad has narrowed the lead of his right-wing rival, Jair Bolsonaro. The poll also reveals that Bolsonaro’s commanding lead has dropped six percent in the past week. The developments seem to have dashed hopes of a turnaround for Haddad. Bolsonaro, however, is still poised to become Brazil’s first far-right leader in more than three decades. The 63-year-old former army captain has pledged to launch a heavy-handed crackdown on crime and corruption. His opponents are concerned about his harsh stance on freedom of speech and civil liberties.

‘Yemen new missiles’

Yemen's Ansarullah forces have for the first time used a new ballistic missile to target Sudanese mercenaries fighting for the Saudi-led coalition. The short-range smart ballistic missile is called Badr P-1. There are no reports of casualties among Saudi forces yet. Yemen’s army, backed by Ansarullah forces, conducts retaliatory attacks against Saudi Arabia using missiles. Last week, Yemeni troops carried out more than 30 attacks against Saudi-led forces in Yemen’s western coast and inside Saudi Arabia. Yemeni snipers also killed 13 Saudi soldiers.

Arba’een march

Millions of Muslims from across the world are descending on the Iraqi holy city of Karbala to commemorate the Day of Arba’een. The pilgrims, most of them Iranians, are travelling on foot toward the city to take part in the annual gathering. They are set to reach Karbala on October 30. Thousands of security forces have been deployed along the routes leading to the holy city. Arba’een is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. It marks 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. He was martyred along with dozens of his companions during the battle of Karbala more than thirteen centuries ago.

‘Inhumane act of violence’

The leader of the Catholic Church has condemned as an inhumane act of violence the deadly shooting at a synagogue in the US state of Pennsylvania. Pope Francis expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. US President Donald Trump also reacted to the Pittsburgh shooting saying the incident had nothing to do with the country’s gun laws. Trump, however, stressed that anti-Semitism must not be tolerated in the US.
