EU stance on Saudi Arabia

The German chancellor has called on the European Union to adopt a common position on potential limits to arms sales to Saudi Arabia over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Angela Merkel said the bloc should find a unified response from all member states about the issue. She once again pledged to suspend her country’s arms exports to Riyadh. The German leader was speaking at a joint news conference with French, Russian and Turkish presidents. French President Emmanuel Macron said any decisions that would be taken, including potential sanctions, must be made at the European level to ensure coordination. Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Nigeria killing

Nigerian security forces have opened fire on supporters of the country’s Islamic Movement during an annual religious procession near the capital Abuja. Scores of people were also injured. The victims were marking the Arba’een mourning ceremonies north of Abuja. The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has strongly condemned the attack. The IMN followers have been subjected to a heavy-handed crackdown since three years ago when the army attacked a religious ceremony in the city of Zaria in the north. In December 2015, Nigerian forces raided the house of IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky and arrested him after killing those attempting to protect the prominent Muslim cleric.

Brazil's presidential election

In Brazil, supporters of both candidates running for president have held rallies in the city of Sao Paulo a day before polls open. Supporters of the leftist Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad marched through a low-income neighborhood while across town, people rallied for right-wing frontrunner, Jair Bolsonaro. According to a new poll, Bolsonaro has seen his commanding lead over Haddad fall six percentage points in the past week. This has fanned hopes of a stunning turnaround for the leftist. Brazilians are going to the polls on Sunday, October 28, to pick their favorite candidate in the most polarized presidential race in decades.

Anti-NATO protest

People in Norway have staged a rally in the capital Oslo protesting against the NATO-led military exercises known as the Trident Juncture. People carried banners reading “neighbors are friends not enemies.” The protesters also called for dialog with Russia and a halt to NATO’s drills in Norway. One protester said the war game is a very unnecessary provocation toward Russia.

Meeting on future of Syria

Leaders of Turkey, Russia, France and Germany meet in the Turkish city of Istanbul to discuss the Syria situation. The four leaders expressed their support for a political resolution to the crisis. They also expressed hope for the formulation of a new Syrian constitution. Rahshan Saglam reports.

Turkish president said that since the murder occurred on Turkish soil, those behind the killing should be tried in Turkey. Kashmir shutdown

A complete shutdown has been observed in Indian-controlled Kashmir to protest the landing of Indian army in the region on this day, 72 years ago. As Press TV's Syed Ali Safvi reports, people have accused New Delhi of promoting the culture of violence in the region to strengthen its occupation. They say despite calling itself the world's largest democracy, India is denying them the peaceful political space by force.
