Iran FM slams US policies

Iran's foreign minister says US failed Middle East policies and wrong choices have led to a string of disasters in the region. Mohammad Javad Zarif said US relentless support for Saudi Arabia and Israel has emboldened them to carry out many atrocities. The top diplomat made the comments in an interview with US network CBS News. Zarif’s remarks come as the Saudis have come under strong international criticism for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The murder has brought the US-Saudi bilateral ties under the spotlight, with many analysts calling for the revision of the relationship between the two countries.

Abbas says no to US plan

The Palestinian president has once again vowed to oppose any peace plan by his US counterpart. Mahmoud Abbas said Palestinians are facing the most dangerous stage in their history after Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital. The Palestinian president added that Trump’s actions amount to imposing a deal unilaterally. The remarks come as the Trump administration is set to unveil its so-called deal of the century between Palestine and Israel by the end of the year. Palestinian officials have frequently said they will thwart the US plan.

Brazil runoff

With almost all votes counted in Brazil’s presidential election, far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro is declared the winner. According to the official results, Bolsonaro gained just over 55 percent of the ballots, leaving his leftist rival Fernando Haddad with nearly 45 percent. The 63-year-old is Brazil’s first far-right leader in more than three decades. Following the announcement, thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters flooded the streets in front of his home in Rio de Janeiro. In his victory speech, Bolsonaro renewed his campaign promises to defend freedom in Latin America’s biggest country.

Indonesia plane crash

A Lion Air flight, with 189 people onboard, has crashed into the sea off Indonesia’s island of Java. The passenger plane was en route from the capital Jakarta to the city of Pangkal Pinang. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency says the plane lost contact with air traffic officials, 13 minutes after take-off. The agency also says the wreckage was found near the location, where the plane lost contact. Indonesian officials say they don’t know whether there are any survivors or not. They also say that no distress signal had been received from the aircraft. For now, the cause of the crash remains unknown.

Arba’een reaching climax

Millions of Muslims are descending on the Iraqi holy city of Karbala to commemorate the Day of Arba’een. The pilgrims, many of them Iranians, are travelling on foot toward to take part in the annual gathering. They are set to reach Karbala on October 30. Thousands of security forces have been deployed along the routes leading to the holy city. Arba’een is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. It marks 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. He was martyred along with dozens of his companions during the battle of Karbala more than thirteen centuries ago.

Korean denuclearization talks

US and South Korean officials meet in Seoul to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. US Special Representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, held a meeting with his South Korean counterpart. The two officials said regular meetings are needed for the advancement of the denuclearization issue.
