Iran and Oman have agreed to continue political and technical negotiations on maritime security and future shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.

Baghaei said on Sunday that the negotiations, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, in Muscat on Saturday, focused on coordinating future navigation and shipping arrangements between the two countries as the coastal states bordering the Strait of Hormuz.

Legal and technical delegations from both sides also took part in the discussions, which addressed maritime safety and security in line with the sovereign rights of the two coastal states, applicable international law and Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), he said.

Baghaei underscored that any future framework governing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must be developed through consultations between Iran and Oman while taking into account the security implications of the latest round of US-Israeli aggression against Iran.

He also said representatives of Qatar participated in part of the negotiations, reflecting Doha’s role in facilitating recent talks between Tehran and Washington.

Araghchi traveled to Muscat on Saturday for discussions with senior Omani officials on the Strait of Hormuz, bilateral relations and regional developments.

The MoU, brokered by Pakistan following the recent US-Israeli aggression against Iran, established a ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.

The agreement also included provisions aimed at safeguarding navigation and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The negotiations come amid renewed US aggression against coastal cities and military centers in southern Iran.

In response to these attacks, Iran’s Armed Forces launched coordinated drone and missile strikes against US military facilities across the region.

Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz “until further notice” over the unauthorized use of the strategic waterway by a container ship.

IRGC added that the strait would remain closed until Washington and its allies end their intervention in the region.
