Iran's bid to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ended in heartbreaking fashion after results elsewhere went against Team Melli, leaving it just outside the eight best third-placed teams.
Iran appeared well positioned to advance after finishing third in Group G with three points from three draws. However, a stoppage-time equalizer by Austria against Algeria reshuffled the rankings of third-placed teams and pushed Iran down to ninth, one place short of qualification under the tournament's expanded 48-team format.
Iran's hopes of advancing rested on several favorable outcomes in the final round of group-stage matches. Team Melli would have progressed had Ghana avoided defeat against Croatia, preventing the Europeans from climbing above Iran in the ranking of third-placed teams.
Iran also needed Uzbekistan to hold or beat DR Congo in Group K, denying the Congolese the points required to overtake it. In Group J, a winner between Austria and Algeria would also have worked in Iran's favor.
Instead, Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1, DR Congo overcame Uzbekistan 3-1 to claim a knockout berth, and Austria and Algeria played out a dramatic 3-3 draw, a result that sent both teams through and ultimately pushed Iran out of the top eight third-placed finishers.
The elimination capped a dramatic campaign that saw Amir Ghalenoei's side remain unbeaten but fail to convert its resilience into the victory it needed.
Iran opened its tournament with a goalless draw against New Zealand before earning another point with a disciplined defensive display against Belgium.
Its decisive Group G clash against Egypt proved to be the most dramatic of the three.

After falling behind early, Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian to earn a 1-1 draw. Mehdi Taremi also had a penalty saved, while Shoja Khalilzadeh thought he had scored a stoppage-time winner that would have sent Iran through automatically.
The celebrations were cut short after a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal out for offside. Moments later, Saeid Ezatolahi struck the crossbar as Iran's hopes slipped away in Seattle.
That draw left Iran relying on favorable results in the remaining groups.
Instead, the final standings among the third-placed teams left Team Melli on the outside looking in, ending another World Cup campaign at the group stage despite an unbeaten record.

Iran's campaign unfolded against an unusual backdrop.
The team faced travel restrictions throughout the tournament, operating from a training base in Mexico and commuting to the United States for matches after several members of its delegation were denied US visas.
Captain Mehdi Taremi and head coach Amir Ghalenoei repeatedly criticized FIFA and tournament organizers over the logistical difficulties, saying the team had been left to "fight against everything."
Despite the disappointment, Iran matched its longest unbeaten run at a World Cup finals with three successive draws. Yet the wait for a first appearance in the knockout stage will continue, with Team Melli still searching for the breakthrough that has eluded it across seven World Cup campaigns.
