Iran vows proportionate response to further US 'provocations' after Bandar Abbas strike

A missile warhead is seen with Iranian flags fluttering in the background.

Iran's deputy foreign minister has warned that Tehran will deliver a "proportionate response" to any continued US provocations, hours after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) struck an American military site in the Persian Gulf in retaliation for a US attack on an airport in southern Iran.

The US military fired projectiles at part of Bandar Abbas airport on Thursday. The IRGC immediately responded by striking the American military site from which the attack had originated, according to Iranian officials.

"The response delivered by the IRGC demonstrated the full readiness of Iran's Armed Forces," Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said. "Should such actions continue, the Islamic Republic of Iran will respond proportionately."

Gharibabadi emphasized that Iran's military strength is matched by national unity and cohesion, both of which reinforce the country's authority.

"Enemies must understand that Iran will show an appropriate and proportionate response to any repetition of threats or acts of aggression," he warned.

The deputy foreign minister also addressed the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil and gas flows. "We will not allow enemies to create any disruption through military or threatening actions," he stressed.

Iran has restricted access through the waterway by barring vessels linked to the US and its allies that participated in or supported the recent US-Israeli war of aggression against the Islamic Republic.

Also on Thursday, Brigadier General Hassan Hassanzadeh, commander of the IRGC's Tehran Command, reaffirmed the full readiness of Iran's Armed Forces, warning that adversaries have repeatedly learned that any miscalculation would be met with a "decisive, definite, effective, and crushing response" in the shortest possible time.

He said military drills would resume immediately after the war ends.

"Immediately after the cessation of hostilities, new drills and training programs based on recent experiences will begin, and today the readiness of the IRGC and the Basij to respond, confront threats, and establish security under the harshest conditions is far greater and stronger than before," Hassanzadeh stressed.

He added that the Iran Navy, the IRGC Aerospace Force, and all sectors of the Iran Army are now at peak readiness, with operational mechanisms structured to respond to any hostile action in the shortest possible time.

The US and Israel launched an unprovoked war of aggression against Iran on February 28, assassinating the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, top commanders, and striking schools, hospitals and civilian infrastructure.

Iran responded with 100 waves of retaliatory strikes under Operation True Promise 4, launching hundreds of ballistic and hypersonic missiles, as well as drones, against American bases across West Asia and Israeli positions in the occupied territories.

A fragile Pakistan‑brokered ceasefire has been in place since early April, but an illegal US naval blockade of Iranian ports remains.
