Lebanon's president to US envoy: Pressure Israel to end ceasefire violations

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun (L) meets with US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa at the Baabada Palace, east of Beirut, Lebanon, on May 11, 2026.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called on the United States to pressure Israel into halting its recurrent violations of a ceasefire agreement with the Beirut government-- daily strikes against towns and villages in southern Lebanon and demolitions of residential buildings.

Aoun made the plea during a meeting with US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa at the Baabada Palace east of Beirut on Monday

The two sides also exchanged viewpoints on the latest developments concerning the third round of ambassador-level talks between representatives from Israel and Lebanon in Washington on May 14 and 15.

Earlier, Issa asserted that Aoun's trip to the United States and his meeting with President Donald Trump must not be seen as harmful to Lebanon.

He further claimed that Lebanon's demands will be taken into consideration during the Aoun-Trump meeting.

In a recent interview with Hezbollah-affiliated al-Manar television channel, Aoun stressed the need for a security pact with Israel before the meeting between Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

Aoun dismissed assertions about an impending sedition in Lebanon as "groundless and unfounded," stating that US-mediated talks produced a favorable outcome.

He added that talks between representatives from Israel and Lebanon are of concern.

Lebanon and the Israeli regime extended their ceasefire for three weeks after a high-level meeting at the White House, Trump said on April 23.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2, soon after the war of aggression against Iran, have killed at least 2,869 people and displaced more than one million.

Israel is occupying a belt of the south that extends 5 to 10 kilometers into Lebanon. The Israeli regime's military reiterated a warning to residents of South Lebanon not to cross into the area.
