April 9: Iran-US ceasefire in place but already fraying as Israeli aggression continues

By Press TV Website Staff

A day after Washington announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, accepting Tehran's 10-point proposal as a "workable basis" for talks, day 41 of the US-Israeli war opened under a cloud of uncertainty as Israel immediately shattered the truce with deadly strikes on Lebanon, killing over 250 civilians.

US President Donald Trump's own position shifted after a phone call with Benjamin Netanyahu, despite earlier assurances — confirmed by Pakistan's prime minister — that Lebanon was included in the truce.

Iranian leaders stressed that stopping Israel's assault on Lebanon is a core condition of the truce roadmap, warning that any attempt to sideline Lebanon or the Axis of Resistance will be met with decisive action as negotiations move to Islamabad.

Key developments on day 41 of the US-Israeli war, the first day of the ceasefire:

  • Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in Tehran to mark the 40th day since the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, top military commanders and schoolchildren of Minab.
  • Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, in his speech marking the 40th day of the Leader’s martyrdom, underscored the vital role of sustained public engagement in resisting US and Israeli aggression as Iran-US negotiations prepare to begin in Islamabad.
  • Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that stopping Israeli military operations in Lebanon is a central requirement in Tehran's proposed 10-point roadmap to end the regional war.
  • Speaker of Iran's Parliament Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned the United States and the Israeli regime that "time is running out," stressing that any attempt to exclude Lebanon or the Axis of Resistance from the recently brokered ceasefire will meet a firm and decisive response.
  • CBS reported, citing diplomatic sources, that Trump initially agreed to include Lebanon in the ceasefire, as Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif also announced; however, the US position changed following a phone call between Trump and Netanyahu.
  • A senior US official said that Iran's 10-point ceasefire proposal does not match the terms Washington has been discussing.
  • US Vice President JD Vance will lead Washington's negotiating team in upcoming talks with Iran in Pakistan on Saturday. Trump's top envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner will accompany him. Iran has said that it does not trust Witkoff or Kushner, especially after the February Geneva track was still in progress when Trump joined Israel in launching military aggression on Iran.
  • Despite a draft shared by Pakistan's prime minister suggesting that Lebanon was part of the deal, US Vice President JD Vance and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt walked it back, insisting the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon.
  • The Pakistani ambassador to Washington stressed that Lebanon is included in the ceasefire agreement reached through his country's mediation between Iran and the United States.
  • Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, and the International Committee of the Red Cross condemned Israeli bombardment on Lebanon. "The level of killing and devastation in Lebanon today is absolutely shocking. This kind of bloodshed, just hours after Israel accepted a ceasefire with Iran, is beyond comprehension," he said.
  • France said that President Emmanuel Macron has been in contact with US, Iranian, and Iraqi leaders, pressing for Lebanon to be added to the ceasefire arrangement, calling it "the most viable route toward peace."
  • Many US lawmakers urgently called on the administration to enforce a regional ceasefire and halt the Israeli bombing of civilians in Lebanon.
  • Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he is reaching out to regional and international partners in a bid to stop Israel's military aggression.
  • Oman, Qatar, and the UAE have denounced Israeli strikes on Lebanon as war crimes and breaches of international law.
  • Hundreds of Americans gathered in Times Square, New York, after news of the ceasefire, demanding a full end to the US-Israel war on Iran and an immediate stop to the bombing of Lebanon.
  • The Lebanese government declared a countrywide day of mourning, closed public offices, and lowered flags as the nation absorbed the shock of one of the deadliest waves of Israeli attacks in recent months.
  • Israeli air attacks killed at least 254 people within 24 hours, marking the most lethal day of bombing in Lebanon since the war began. The surge in strikes came immediately after the US-Iran ceasefire announcement.
  • Leader of Yemen's Ansarallah movement Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said the declaration of a ceasefire in the US-Israeli war of terrorism is, in itself, a significant victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Resistance Axis.
  • In a survey published on Wednesday, 52 percent of registered American voters supported impeaching Trump over his war on Iran and other controversial policies.
