Iran blasts UN chief for downplaying US-Israeli atrocities

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has sharply criticized the secretary-general of the United Nations for downplaying the human toll of the fresh unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic.

Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in a message addressed to António Guterres in a post on X on Friday.

Let’s call a spade a spade

Baghaei began his message by urging the UN chief to describe the situation more directly.

"Let's call a spade a spade," he wrote, rejecting generic descriptions referring to the situation as simple “fighting” and underlining that Iran was facing a deliberate act of aggression.

“This is not 'the fighting'; this is an 'unprovoked act of aggression' launched by two nuclear armed regimes against Iran."

The spokesman reminded that the attacks took place, while diplomatic efforts were ongoing between Tehran and Washington as was the case concerning the previous round of unlawful Israeli-American aggression towards the nation, which took place last June.

"We WERE in 'serious diplomatic negotiations' while the U.S./Israel attacked Iran, for a second time during the past 9 months."

The official also criticized the secretary-general's focus on economic concerns instead of civilian casualties inside Iran.

"You are concerned about 'grave risk to the global economy'; what about the innocent civilians, including 175 little angels slaughtered in the City of Minab, and many more killed and maimed across Iran during the past 7 days of American/Israeli criminal acts?!"

The children slaughtered in the city, which is located in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, are among the more than 1,100 people, who have been martyred throughout the aggression that began last Saturday.

Call for UN responsibility

Baghaei concluded his message by urging the United Nations to take a clearer stance on the situation.

"The UN shall be forthright and shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities regarding this illegal war on Iran."
