UNGA Ukraine resolution
Iran has voted negative for a UN General Assembly resolution on the Ukraine war. Iran's UN mission stressed that the text does not address the root causes of the conflict, including provocative actions and decisions by certain states and NATO. The mission reiterated Iran's principled position that all disputes should be resolved through peaceful means and dialog, in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. It added that the resolution not only fails to advance peace, but may also exacerbate existing divisions because it is presented at an inopportune time, and without prior transparent consultations. The Iranian mission emphasized that the purpose of this resolution is not to support lasting peace in Ukraine, but rather to serve as a political maneuver in an ongoing geopolitical rivalry. The mission said Iran will continue its constructive engagement in support of a peaceful resolution to this crisis, while rejecting baseless allegations of supporting one side in this conflict.
Gaza 'Board of Peace'
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad has condemned the recent meeting of the so-called Gaza Board of Peace in Washington as a theatrical performance, which had nothing to do with what is happening in Gaza. Islamic Jihad said the reality is that US President Donald Trump is trying to collect billions of dollars on the back of destroyed Gaza, not for its reconstruction, but to control its future. The movement added that the meeting was meant to impose Israel’s vision, which insists on disarming the resistance as a prelude to the reconstruction of Gaza. Islamic Jihad added that the Trump administration has ignored the issue of Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza, and the regime’s crimes in the occupied West Bank, including land confiscation and settlement construction. It also slammed Israel’s membership in the board, saying the regime is still committing crimes in Gaza four months after the ceasefire started.
Epstein files fallout
Norway’s former prime minister has reportedly been hospitalized after a suicide attempt, which followed a corruption probe into his relations with late U-S sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. The suicide attempt came several days after Norwegian police launched the investigation and searched Thorbjorn Jagland’s properties. According to the documents released by the US Justice Department, Jagland and members of his family allegedly vacationed at Epstein’s residences between 2011 and 2018. The documents showed that Epstein paid for the former Norwegian PM and his family’s travel to his properties. After searching Jagland’s properties, the investigators reportedly took out some boxes from his residence in Oslo. The raids followed a decision by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers to revoke Jagland’s diplomatic immunity following a request from the Norwegian authorities. In addition to being Norway’s prime minister, Jagland also served as a former head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and was Secretary General of the Council of Europe for around a decade.
