Iran-Russia naval drill

Iran and Russia will launch a joint naval exercise in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean on Thursday. According to a spokesperson for the drill, Rear Admiral Hassan Maqsoudlou, the exercise is aimed at boosting security and strengthening durable maritime interactions in the region. He says expanding joint maritime cooperation, especially in protecting commercial ships and tankers as well as combating maritime terrorism, is among the main goals of the drill. Iran’s navy official made the remarks during his visit to the Russian Navy’s helicopter carrier Stoyskiy, which docked in Iran’s southern waters. Russia’s Navy Force Commander Captain Alexey Sergeev, for his part, praised the close ties between the two countries, saying both navies are prepared for specialized drills, including maritime counter-terrorism operations.

Russian oil transit to EU

Moscow has slammed as energy blackmail Ukraine’s blocking of Russian oil supplies to EU member Hungary. The condemnation was issued by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He was pointing to the Druzhba oil pipeline that delivers the Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia. Peskov said Russia is in contact with its oil buyers, adding that Ukraine’s position has complicated the situation. He confirmed that companies are considering sending the Russian crude oil via a pipeline in Croatia. This comes after Hungary and Slovakia asked Croatia to allow the transit via its Adriatic pipeline. Oil flows to Hungary and Slovakia via Russia’s Druzhba pipeline have been halted since January 27th. Budapest and Bratislava both hold exemptions to E-U sanctions on Russian piped oil.
