The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations has strongly condemned a recent “illegal” move by the European Union to blacklist Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and level unfounded accusations against the elite military force.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the 18-member UN group said that the EU’s “terrorist” designation of the IRGC targets a constitutional part of the armed forces of an independent country.

The EU’s move clearly violates the fundamental rules of international law, including the principle of sovereign equality of states and the principle of non-interference in their internal affairs, and runs contrary to the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, it added.

Under well-established principles of international law, states, as equal and independent entities, do not have the right to exercise jurisdiction or impose unilateral measures against each other, and cannot subject legitimate armed forces of a sovereign state to unlawful and coercive measures, and label them as a terrorist group.

The UN group also noted that the EU’s decision sets a dangerous precedent and undermines genuine counter-terrorism efforts, while ultimately serving the interests of terrorist groups.

It further appreciated the role played by the Islamic Republic and its armed forces, particularly the IRGC, in countering and preventing the spread of terrorism in the region and fighting the Daesh terrorist group.

Additionally, the group reaffirmed its solidarity with the people and government of Iran as a founding member of the 18-nation bloc.

During a meeting in Brussels on Friday, EU foreign ministers classified the IRGC as a “terrorist” entity, citing Iran’s response to recent foreign-linked riots.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry denounced the EU’s “provocative, wholly irresponsible, and insulting action,” saying it was taken to “gratify a genocidal and occupying regime (Israel) and its war-mongering supporters in the United States.”

Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said Iran considers European countries’ armies as terrorist groups in a countermeasure.

“By trying to deal a blow to the IRGC, which was the greatest obstacle to the spread of terrorism to Europe, the Europeans actually shot themselves in the foot and once again made decisions against their people’s interests through blindly obeying the Americans,” he emphasized.
