Learning amid Gaza's ruins
In Gaza City, students, teachers, and families at al-Nour School have staged a solidarity stand, calling for the immediate delivery of mobile caravans to replace worn-out tents now used as shelters and classrooms. As displacement drags on, children say their right to education and safety can no longer be delayed.
Israel recognizes Somaliland
Egypt, Turkey, Somalia, and Djibouti have strongly condemned Israel’s controversial move to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. The four nations denounced the decision, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reaffirmed their united stance against attempts to fragment Somalia. In a joint statement following consultations among their foreign ministers, Egypt, Turkey, Somalia, and Djibouti stressed that the self-declared republic has no legitimacy under international law. The four states also said that the unity of Somalia is non-negotiable. The condemnation comes after the Israeli Prime Minister announced the signing of a joint declaration with Somaliland, framing it as part of the Abraham Accords. The move by Israel has sparked regional outrage, with officials warning it undermines stability in the Horn of Africa. Adding to the controversy, Somaliland’s self-proclaimed foreign minister earlier this year told Israel that his territory would welcome displaced residents of Gaza on the condition that Tel Aviv grant Somaliland official recognition.
Syria mosque attack
A terrorist attack on a mosque during prayers has left at least eight people dead in the Syrian city of Homs. The attack also injured nearly 30 others. A terrorist group dubbed Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah has issued a statement claiming responsibility. The group is an offshoot of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which leads Syria’s transitional government. The interim rulers of Syria as well as Qatar, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey have condemned the attack on Ali Ibn Abi Talib Mosque. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman also denounced the attack. In a statement, Esmaeil Baqaei offered condolences to bereaved families, noting the responsibility of Syria’s transitional government in punishing the perpetrators. Baqaei said parties involved in violations of Syria’s sovereignty and occupation of its territory are responsible for the spread of terrorism and extremism in the country.
